List Growth Rate

email metric

01 Definition

List Growth Rate meaning: How quickly an email list gains net new subscribers over a period.

List growth rate measures the net change in subscribers over a period, accounting for new signups minus unsubscribes and bounces, divided by the starting list size. It shows whether a list is expanding or shrinking. A rising subscriber count still needs healthy engagement, since inactive contacts add little value.

Why it matters

How List Growth Rate fits the work

Lists naturally decay as people unsubscribe or change addresses, so tracking growth tells you whether you are adding subscribers faster than you lose them.

In context

A list of 10,000 that gains 600 signups and loses 200 contacts grew by a net 400, a 4 percent growth rate.

Practical note

Include unsubscribes and hard bounces in the calculation, not just new signups, or the rate will overstate real growth and hide a declining list.
