Cognitive Load

UX concept

01 Definition

Cognitive Load meaning: The mental effort a person needs to understand and use an interface.

Cognitive load is how much thinking a task demands from working memory. When a page has too much information, jargon, or choices at once, load rises and users struggle or quit. Clear layout, plain wording, and grouping related items lower the burden and make actions easier to complete.

Why it matters

How Cognitive Load fits the work

Keeping mental effort low helps visitors process a page quickly, so they can act without feeling overwhelmed or confused.

In context

Splitting a dense signup screen into labeled sections lowered cognitive load and helped more users reach the final step.

Practical note

Working memory is limited, so hiding advanced options and revealing detail progressively often works better than showing everything at once.
