Unmoderated Testing

UX research method

01 Definition

Unmoderated Testing meaning: A usability session participants complete alone, without a live facilitator.

Unmoderated testing lets participants complete tasks on their own, usually through a tool that records screen, clicks, or voice. It is faster and cheaper to scale than moderated testing. The tradeoff is that no one can ask follow-up questions or help when a participant misreads a task.

Why it matters

How Unmoderated Testing fits the work

Running many sessions without scheduling lets teams gather feedback quickly and cheaply, which suits early validation and larger sample sizes.

In context

The team launched an unmoderated test to 40 participants overnight and reviewed the recordings the next morning for common drop-off points.

Practical note

Write tasks clearly, since you cannot clarify them mid-session; confusing instructions produce noisy data that is hard to separate from real usability problems.
