Bounce (Analytics)

analytics concept

01 Definition

Bounce (Analytics) meaning: A bounce is a visit that ended without meeting the engagement or interaction threshold.

A bounce originally meant a single-page session with no further interaction, measured as bounce rate. In Google Analytics 4, bounce is redefined as the opposite of engagement: a session that was not engaged. Bounce rate there equals the percentage of sessions that did not qualify as engaged.

Why it matters

How Bounce (Analytics) fits the work

Bounce highlights visits that showed little interest, prompting you to check whether pages match visitor intent or fail to invite further action.

In context

If 40 percent of sessions were not engaged in Google Analytics 4, the bounce rate for that period was 40 percent under the new definition.

!

Practical note

Universal Analytics and Google Analytics 4 define bounce differently, so their bounce rates are not comparable; always confirm which definition a report uses.
