Custom Dimension

analytics concept

01 Definition

Custom Dimension meaning: A user-defined attribute that adds descriptive detail to analytics reports.

A custom dimension stores a descriptive attribute you choose, such as membership level, author, or content category. In GA4 you register an event or user parameter as a custom dimension so it appears in reports and explorations. Dimensions describe qualities, while metrics count or measure amounts.

Why it matters

How Custom Dimension fits the work

Custom dimensions let you slice reports by attributes specific to your business, giving context that standard dimensions cannot provide.

In context

A site registers a custom dimension for membership_level, so analysts can compare engagement between free and paid members in GA4 explorations.

Practical note

GA4 caps the number of custom dimensions, and data only appears after you register the parameter, not retroactively. High-cardinality values can also be grouped as other in reports.
