Data Retention

analytics setting

01 Definition

Data Retention meaning: How long an analytics tool keeps user and event data before deleting it.

Data retention is the period an analytics platform stores user-level and event-level data before automatic deletion. In Google Analytics 4 you choose a retention window in settings, and it affects data available for explorations and custom analysis. Standard aggregate reports are generally not limited the same way.

Why it matters

How Data Retention fits the work

Retention settings balance privacy obligations with analysis needs, since shorter windows limit how far back you can explore user-level data in detail.

In context

A team sets GA4 data retention to fourteen months, so explorations can analyze user-level events for just over a year before older data is removed.

Practical note

Deletion is not always reversible, so review the retention setting early. To keep long-term detail, export raw data, for example to BigQuery, before it ages out of the interface.
