Engagement Time

analytics metric

01 Definition

Engagement Time meaning: Engagement time measures how long a page or app was actively in focus.

Engagement time in Google Analytics 4 counts the time a page or screen was in the foreground and the user was active. It stops when the tab is hidden or the app is backgrounded. This makes it a stricter measure than older time metrics that included idle time.

Why it matters

How Engagement Time fits the work

Engagement time aims to capture active attention rather than raw elapsed time, giving a more honest read on how long people actually focus on content.

In context

A landing page logged average engagement time of 45 seconds, counting only the moments the tab was visible and the visitor was active.

Practical note

Because it excludes background and idle time, engagement time is usually lower than old session duration figures, so do not compare the two directly.
