Exit Rate

analytics metric

01 Definition

Exit Rate meaning: Exit rate is the share of pageviews of a page that were the last in a session.

Exit rate for a page divides the number of exits from that page by the total pageviews of the page. It shows how often people leave the site from a given page. Unlike bounce rate, it counts exits regardless of where the session started or how many pages preceded it.

Why it matters

How Exit Rate fits the work

Exit rate helps you find pages where people tend to leave, so you can check whether the exit is a natural end point or a problem to fix.

In context

A checkout page had 2,000 pageviews and 500 exits, giving a 25 percent exit rate for that page during the period.

!

Practical note

A high exit rate is normal for confirmation or thank-you pages, so judge it by the page's role rather than treating every exit as a failure.
