Hit

analytics term

01 Definition

Hit meaning: A hit is a single interaction sent to an analytics server, such as a pageview or event.

In older analytics like Universal Analytics, a hit is one packet of data sent to the server, for example a pageview, event, or transaction. Plans and quotas counted hits. Google Analytics 4 replaced this model, treating every interaction as an event instead.

Why it matters

How Hit fits the work

Understanding hits helps when reading legacy Universal Analytics data or hit based pricing limits, and it clarifies why GA4 numbers do not line up with the old counts.

In context

A page that loaded once and fired two events sent three hits to Universal Analytics: one pageview and two event hits.

Practical note

Universal Analytics capped standard properties at millions of hits per month and could sample data above certain limits, so busy sites sometimes lost detail.
