Metric

analytics concept

01 Definition

Metric meaning: A metric is a number that measures a quantity, such as counts, rates, or averages.

A metric is a quantitative measurement in an analytics report, like pageviews, sessions, or bounce rate. Metrics are always numbers and are usually shown against dimensions that give them context. A metric on its own tells you how much or how many, but not who, what, or where.

Why it matters

How Metric fits the work

Metrics turn raw activity into countable values you can compare over time, spot trends, and judge whether a change helped or hurt performance.

In context

In one report, sessions is a metric with a value of 12,400, showing how many visits the site received during the selected month.

!

Practical note

Do not compare metrics across tools without checking their definitions, since platforms count sessions, users, and events differently and the same label can mean different things.
