Scroll Depth

engagement metric

01 Definition

Scroll Depth meaning: Scroll depth measures how far down a page visitors scroll, often as a percentage.

Scroll depth tracks how much of a page a visitor reaches, commonly at milestones like 25, 50, 75, and 100 percent. It is usually captured as events. In Google Analytics 4, an automatic scroll event fires when a user reaches roughly 90 percent of the page.

Why it matters

How Scroll Depth fits the work

Scroll depth shows whether people actually reach key content lower on a page, helping you judge layout, length, and where to place important messages.

In context

On a long article, 70 percent of visitors reached the 50 percent mark but only 30 percent scrolled to the bottom of the page.

Practical note

Scroll events measure reaching a point, not reading it, so a 100 percent scroll can still mean the visitor skimmed or scrolled past without engaging.
