Universal Analytics
01 Definition
Universal Analytics meaning: Google's earlier analytics version, now retired, built on a session and pageview model.
Universal Analytics was the previous generation of Google Analytics, organized around sessions, pageviews, and category-action-label events. Google stopped processing new data in Universal Analytics properties in July 2023 and later shut down access, replacing it with Google Analytics 4. Its historical data and reporting structure differ from GA4.

Why it matters
How Universal Analytics fits the work
Knowing Universal Analytics helps you interpret older reports and understand why GA4 metrics and event models look different from what many teams used for years.
In context
An analyst notes that the site's 2022 traffic figures come from Universal Analytics, so they avoid comparing them one to one with GA4 totals.
Practical note
Do not compare Universal Analytics and GA4 numbers directly, since they define sessions, events, and users differently. Historical UA data had to be exported before Google removed access.
