Ad Fraud

advertising risk

01 Definition

Ad Fraud meaning: Deceptive activity that generates fake ad views or clicks to steal advertising spend.

Ad fraud is any scheme that fakes ad interactions, such as bots loading pages, hidden or stacked ads, or spoofed domains, to collect money for impressions and clicks that no real person values. It wastes budget and distorts reporting. Verification vendors and industry standards help detect it but cannot eliminate it entirely.

Why it matters

How Ad Fraud fits the work

Ad fraud drains a measurable share of digital budgets and pollutes performance data, so understanding it protects both spend and the reliability of campaign metrics.

In context

An audit found that a cheap display network was serving stacked, hidden ads, meaning most of the brand's paid impressions there were fraudulent and unseen.

Practical note

A campaign can show strong clicks and impressions while much of the traffic is fraudulent, so judge quality with verification and downstream outcomes, not surface metrics alone.
