Ad Relevance

advertising quality component

01 Definition

Ad Relevance meaning: A Google Ads rating of how closely your ad matches the intent behind a search.

Ad Relevance is one of three components of Google Ads Quality Score, shown as Below average, Average, or Above average. It measures how well your keyword and ad text match what the searcher wants. It is a diagnostic signal, not a direct number used in the auction.

Why it matters

How Ad Relevance fits the work

Ad Relevance helps you spot keywords whose ads do not match user intent, so you can tighten ad groups and wording.

In context

An ad group targeting "running shoes" and "hiking boots" shows Below average Ad Relevance until the advertiser splits it into two focused ad groups.

!

Practical note

It is a relative diagnostic, not a live ranking input. A "Below average" rating points to a mismatch between keywords and ad copy, often fixed by splitting broad ad groups.
