Product Listing Ad (PLA)
01 Definition
Product Listing Ad (PLA) meaning: The original Google name for a feed-driven Shopping ad: the unit that shows a product image, price, title, and merchant name directly in search results.
A Product Listing Ad, or PLA, is the feed-based product ad that Google now calls a Shopping ad. It shows a product photo, the title, the price, and the store name in the search results, so a shopper can compare options before clicking anything.
The name is the main source of confusion. Google launched these units as Product Listing Ads and later renamed them Shopping ads, but the underlying product never changed. Documentation, agency decks, certification material, and third-party reporting tools all still use PLA, so the two terms describe the same thing.
What separates a PLA from a text ad is where the content comes from. You do not write the ad and you do not bid on keywords for it. The ad is assembled automatically from a product feed you submit to Google Merchant Center, and Google decides which searches it matches by reading the feed attributes: the product title, product type, brand, GTIN, and category. Your feed is effectively your keyword targeting.
That makes feed quality the main performance lever. A vague product title limits which searches the item can appear for, no matter how much you bid. Microsoft Advertising runs the same model under the name Product Ads, fed from its own Merchant Center.
Why it matters
How Product Listing Ad (PLA) fits the work
Understanding that PLA and Shopping ad are the same unit saves real confusion when you read older material. A 2014 guide describing PLA campaign structure is not describing a discontinued format, it is describing the ads you are running today under a different label. It also explains why keyword research does not work the way it does for search campaigns: with no keywords to bid on, the work moves into the feed, where titles and product types decide what you can rank for.
In context
An agency inherits an account and finds a reporting dashboard with a column labelled PLA spend, while the Google Ads interface shows only Shopping campaigns. Nothing is broken and nothing is missing. The dashboard was built before the rename and is reading the same campaigns under the older name.
Practical note
Treat PLA and Shopping ad as interchangeable in conversation, and do not go looking for a separate PLA campaign type, because there is not one. If performance is weak, audit the feed before you touch bids: check that titles lead with the words shoppers actually search, that prices and availability match the landing page, and that GTINs are present. Merchant Center will disapprove items over mismatched price or stock data, and disapproved items simply stop showing.
